CHAPTER NINE

~ The Recovery ~

SANAA WOKE UP AND RUBBED her lower belly that was still hurting, and she was rankling on the events that unfolded yesterday. She got up and sat on the side of the bed. She looked over to her husband and saw that he was still fast asleep. As a yawn came, she put her palm over her mouth. She felt empty. She couldn’t forget how abruptly she lost the one thing she wanted so badly. She felt a puddle underneath her and she knew she had to clean herself up. Forcing herself to get up, she made a beeline to the restroom and washed her face and brushed her teeth – she took a long hot shower and put on a fresh, extra thick sanitary pad. Sanaa knew that tampons shouldn’t be used for this type of bleeding, the lochia of miscarriage. She made it back to her bed, changed the sheets and then sat back down on the edge. She gazed at the alarm clock that occupied the nightstand and it displayed 6:45 a.m. She felt fatigued and was an emotional wreck – tears flowed freely again, making little rivers down her smooth cheeks. Gauging if she could function efficiently in the office, she decided that going to work was nowhere on her agenda today. She reached the final verdict to call in to her job so she could take the day off to relax – and she did after getting a grip on herself. Just then, O’shay stirred from his sleep and then sprang up and looked at the woman he married. He knew that she had been crying. Cupping Sanaa’s cute and dainty face in his hands, O’shay said softly, “Bae, please darling. I can’t see you like this.” Sanaa buried her face in his chest and wept bitterly. He let her let it all out, stroking her hair and holding her close.

When Sanaa visibly calmed down, O’shay told her to lie on the bed while he made breakfast. He scrambled some eggs, made cheese toast, grits and sausage patties and greeted his wife with a plateful. He fed her and she ate quietly. Sanaa reveled in her husband’s tender, loving care.

Fearing the silence would consume them, O’shay asked Sanaa how the food tasted and she replied,

“It’s good O’shay. You’re a wonderful cook.”

“How long have you been up?” He asked with great concern.

“Not that long.” Sanaa was curt.

“Did you get enough sleep?”

“I think so. What about you?”

“I don’t remember when I dozed off babe. Maybe around one am.”

“You were awake that long?” Sanaa stared at O’shay as he stuffed another morsel of scrambled egg in her mouth.

“I don’t remember exactly honey.” He brushed off a bread crumb from her lip.

“Right. Well, I’m not going to work today.”

“Yes darling, I was about to recommend that. I’m glad that you decided that,” Sanaa motioned for something to drink and O’shay rushed out and returned with a glass of soy milk.

Sanaa gulped half a glass of the vanilla almond milk down and said feebly “O’shay, I apologize for last night.
